Pagana, seguace di un neoplatonismo più tollerante su base matematica, fu considerata eretica dai cristiani. Quando, nel 412, ad Alessandria diventò patriarca Cirillo, iniziò una persecuzione contro i neoplatonici e gli ebrei. Ipazia si rifiutò di convertirsi e di abbandonare le sue idee. Nel marzo del 415 fu assassinata in modo brutale. Con la sua morte finì l’insegnamento neoplatonico in Alessandria e in tutto l’impero.
