Lesson Wii

In the future of education is not only the LIM. In the garden of free software is a flower made of popped open source and a touch of hacking. It's called Wiild, and has depopulated the Linux Day

Rome - In recent years, the school has embraced the technologies that are adaptable and can be used for teaching. This acquisition process was slow and painless but has led to, in many cases, schools and facilities in line with the times. The novelty of these days is that the schools have been equipped with a number of LIM (multimedia interactive whiteboards) which are intended, slowly, to replace the blackboards and chalk with markers to which all teachers are accustomed to.

Having a LIM puts the teacher in a position to do their work in a (precisely) interactive, but also using it as a blackboard, with the appropriate software to create multimedia lessons with video, voice and special effects vari salvando il tutto su file e rendendo così possibile aggiornare e modificare le varie unità didattiche; nonché di consentire agli alunni a casa di mettersi in pari con le spiegazioni come se fossero stati presenti.

Punto Informatico: Che What is Wiild?
Fabrizio Felici: The Wiild or Blackboard Digital Wii console by the name of a popular video game, is a project started in 2007 and developed rapidly in various countries around the world (hey, it's all free software), to offer a ' effective alternative, low-cost LIM, Multimedia Interactive Whiteboard. It is based on a simple principle: the detection of movements that are done on a flat surface (screen, cloth, wall ...), in order to give commands to a computer as if you had a mouse in his hand.

PI: What do you need exactly to get a board like this?
FF: The heart of the system is the infrared remote control white called a "Wiimote", which is the translator of these movements for the computer. The equipment needed is a standard computer, usually but not necessarily portable, connected to a projector that projects the computer's video output and a pen on the surface chosen infrared remote control that acts as a button.

PI: What are the functions of the various components?
FF: The Wiimote capture the movements and pressure of the pen on the surface by the infrared rays that it emits and re-send them to your computer via Bluetooth, or via radio.

FF: Since you have a computer that should not be particularly powerful, the parts needed are: headlamp (350 Euro), wiimote (39 €), pen infrared (15-17 Euros). In addition to these there may be need for a bluetooth dongle on USB port (10 Euro), and any computer work with this set. If you want we can add a special plexiglas support necessary for the remote control (20 Euro) which is screwed to a tripod (5 euros), and if not sivuole continuously change the batteries in the remote rechargeable battery pack via a usb (10 Euro).

PI: What are the costs of software?
FF: The software, being free, no license costs. Add to become a pen alone is pretty simple: just 1 AA battery, a switch and a micro emitter led 940nm, things that can be bought for 3-4 Euro. Already three of our group have succeeded in the enterprise, making three different pens with each other and working.

PI: What software is available and what operating systems are compatible?
FF: The software support required for translation of the clicks on the screen, like many free software, is available online in various versions and for all desktop operating systems (Windows, Mac and GNU / Linux). One of the most popular and developed is called python-whiteboard, and such is available natively for Debian and Ubuntu. This allows the connection with the remote control and calibration of the screen, from here you can operate.

PI: Wiild is compatible with other software?
FF: There are other interesting software to make us work together more easily available on the Web, like all of the Educational package for GNU / Linux, a clickable virtual keyboard on the screen, and the most interesting Slate, among other things, developed Italian by a good programmer. This allows you to write in the foreground on the screen using the pen as a piece of chalk, and among other things gives way to save in PDF and even record what is being done with VLC. It is worth mentioning that all free software, open and without licensing costs. Among other things, there is a community behind a mailing list that responds promptly to any problems with competence.

PI: How long does the installation and calibration?
FF: Time to turn on the projector, then the computer, and then that the system loads the remote control is installed at 30 degrees to the left of the projector (the angle between the two segments-overhead-projector Wiimote, which is aimed at the center screen) if the rapporteur is right-handed, 30 degrees to the right if left-handed. Then you activate the Bluetooth, turn on the calibration program, you press buttons 1 and 2 of the remote control, and after 30 seconds the screen shows calibration. At this point you should just "click" the pen in circles to the 4 sides of the screen, in sequence.

PI: It is a system within the reach of a teacher, maybe not accustomed to the use of technology?
FF: The installation is the longest part but just a little practice, maybe two rounds with someone who is successful, follow the above rules 2-3 and everything works. A computer enthusiast succeeds at most at the second attempt. Our demonstrations, then, we always to try the pen who has never experienced: a minute of uncertainty because the pen is made oblique, have fun using it. Perhaps they wonder what we surprised us the first time how easy it is.

PI: There are significant differences Wiild and LMI?
FF: Teaching your not, do the same thing, are interactive screens. A touch-screen, a tablet, does not need to be calibrated each time, and has no batteries in the remote, but that certainly does not justify the disproportionate cost. Among other things, my understanding is that while in Wiild the choice of software is virtually unlimited (all available under the GNU / Linux) this is not true for the LMI, which has a limited set of programs for its smooth functioning.

PI: How do you create interactive lessons for Wiild?
FF: Lessons can be prepared in OpenOffice.org, for example, exactly how to prepare the slides for a presentation, or use that as educational programs. The reference sites are wiild.it for the project itself, and dossierscuola.it to find a guide to the introduction of free software in schools, which includes information on many great programs to use.

PI: Why you should prefer a Wiild LMI?
FF: Pariamo the most obvious reason, the small school finances: the cost is much lower. LMI can be purchased with a 5 or 6 Wiild, and where there is no money to buy even a LMI there may be some Wiild. Among other things, wanting to nothing prevents you from running the projector between classrooms, are now portable tools. Moreover, with the Wiild you buy the tools for other purposes (the sender), and takes little time and expense in order to have a system up to date with the latest programs available. What is the hardware cost, long-lasting and is perfectly divisible by the software.

PI: It's not only the economic aspect to consider.
FF: practical reasons: the one that runs in the system Wiild can run on any computer that is at home, so students are free to use the course material as they wish. Reasons of reliability: if one fails LMI who sit and how much the repairs? A Wiild made by yourself is always under control. Reasons of freedom: there will never be closed imposed standards, so a LMI can not work with the material of another LMI, whereas all the PCs in the world can work with those who use Wiild. Finally, ethical issues: the free software in schools, because of its high value of education in the legal and sharing of knowledge and culture.

PI: after experiencing it, you state that allows a teacher to do their job as if he were in front of a traditional blackboard (the one with the crayon or chalk)?

Cambia il modo di fare lezione, è a large and fascinating renewal, especially for younger students. Even the mere fact of being able to project an electronic book, and read, comment, pointing out, fix it, take notes above, may be interesting.

How does a book Open Source?

We are used when we talk about OpenSource, thinking about the software, as well as when we speak of the CC license free with which you legally share and preserve the intellectual work that we usually find on the Internet. Would never think to associate both a book and Moreover, not only in electronic form, even on paper. Instead it happened, there is a textbook of mathematics, open source and released under CC license.

The idea for this came to Professor Antonio Bernardo, a professor of mathematics at the Liceo Scientifico Banzi "of Lecce, the author of numerous publications in 2000 and founder of the site matematicamente.it born to" search strategies engage children, to get feedback from students, with games and curiosity but also by providing a broad view of the matter ", as the founder said in an interview. The site was immediately very successful, but success was not complete for the teacher and mathematician, hence the wanting to challenge themselves with a new company, innovative and certainly unique in Italian ( similar initiatives are underway in the U.S.).

Thus came to light a textbook, titled "Mathematics C3" where C is a collaboration, Creative Commons and the other, is designed for students of upper secondary school degree. Sfongliandolo it is simple, clear, well structured, probably will be appreciated even by students who will use it, the more that has a very different characteristics than the other books they own. The text is supplemented by anyone who has the knowledge, a text can always be better and therefore has no price (in all senses).
Professor Bernard has agreed to answer some questions about the project and the book.
I know that she has experienced several publishing experiences: How did the idea of \u200b\u200bthis book so different from what we usually see?
When you write a textbook, especially if many hands, and cause to be published by a publishing house costs are high and earnings for the authors are ridiculous. Becomes even more complex because the work to update the book "belongs" to the publisher. Looking at the textbook and with the eyes of the teacher who uses it, is the author who writes it, I realized a trivial and elementary: Who writes the textbooks are the teachers who use them are always the teachers and students, who exploit this mechanism are players outside the school. Representatives, libraries, publishers.
You can change this?
Today there are tools, both electronic and print on demand system, which allow you to "circuit" directly to the teachers / authors with the teacher / student users, leaving the world outside of the economic exploitation of the and for this reason I decided to take this path and become a publisher myself.
How long has demanded his execution?
For some 'time I had this idea but I was afraid to leave, for more legal issues for organizations, I imagined that I would come into conflict with economic interests rather strong, and I was going to struggle with red tape at all trivial. Then, once we got the courage to leave I could see that many teachers liked the idea, and they're excited to be working, once set in motion the organizing apparatus then you will never go back. From the initial design stage, to define a common line, the first draft of the first volume have been a couple of years.
Two years are enough to complete the entire journey?
The project is still at the beginning because we hope to complete all five volumes for the years of high school, however, be able to bring to complete the first volume was a great result. Being able to close the production cycle of the first volume means that the project is feasible.
The choice of DC was yours? If so, why?
I chose the DC is more open to give the chance for everyone to customize the text and share it. The teacher who adopts and uses this book has a way to change or suggest changes according to the school where I teach, the way they work and the needs of its students. The book can then be shared not only free but also customized.
I noticed that the printed text is not the SIAE stamp ... Anticipating
bureaucracy I have proposed as an editor of the book and I gave it an ISBN so that it could be inserted easily through the textbooks adopted for this paper has its own version. For books the SIAE stamp is to ensure the author and certify the number of copies sold, so that the publisher's match due under the contract. For this book there are no fees to pay nor the authors nor the publisher, so it makes sense to keep an exact count of copies sold or makes sense to certify the originality of the book, because as with the Creative Commons license there sono copie originali e copie contraffatte: tutte le copie, anche quelle stampate in casa o fotocopiate, sono legittime.
In effetti, le persone del gruppo promotore, those who have embraced the project to share expectations and results, you have never met physically, but I must say that it was not a handicap: the Internet and the tools it offers, means that we can compare in real time. In fact, we regularly chat to join the editorial work, but everyone works for himself and shares the work product.
What makes you believe that a book written by a group of fans that can be defined, not professional writers, can be equally effective?
I know from experience that a textbook written by professionals who are not teachers or students (why not?) Is ineffective because we need experience in which you want to address specific issues, and even the language just because a textbook can really be called such. I should point out that it would be more correct to call it manually, since it is designed not so much for the theory, that is a matter for the teacher as to provide a wide range of exercises that are more complex to prepare. One of the main indications for this writer, the text is to tell the math the same way that tells the class in front of the students. The book then is not directed to an imaginary audience of students, but students who are accustomed to have in class.
PI: If others want to help her out, how should I do? What tools they need to do? In practice, what kind of help you need most?
AB: There are several levels of cooperation. A small group of authors who write a first draft of the theory with some examples and some exercises. There are some who revised and expanded text. But above all we need people who then writes the exercises, who is able to perform and verify the result, preferably using the symbolic computation software. In fact so much work needed to correct the text and the reader, who integrates it with exercises better if original, with some new idea, of those who find errors in the text or exercises in the result. For this type of work students are more suitable for teachers.
Cos'altro?
Sarebbe una sfida "culturale" larger if we could spread the idea of \u200b\u200ba school more democratic, more free, where everyone can draw at least to basic resources, in this case a textbook of mathematics, for free, with no secrets to anyone: a book know in advance which is shared by a number of teachers across Italy, teaching in different types of school, what it is not easy to achieve even for a large publishing house.
think that others in other disciplines, will follow his path?
I hope so, and then directed the Ministry of Education seems to prefer electronic books, the ones downloaded from the Internet, I hope you go even further in this direction. However I think it is much easier to achieve more hands, and then collaboratively, not a scientific text that such a literature or history, where the imprint of the author is more important. Probably, however, for anthologies of texts of classic tracks such as one sees so many on the Internet, it should be much easier. Could be used to collect some 'of these songs and make a school textbook. We hope that when you spread the other hand our colleagues in other disciplines to realize that a project is feasible.
Do you know if there have been schools that have adopted the text?
There are six requests I receive, but still has some school lasciata la possibilità di adottare il nuovo libro a settembre.
working with people who in many cases have no preparation for information I decided to leave choice to the authors the tools to use, because I believe that people should not be forced to study a software that will use occasionally. The final product is released in two versions, the PDF ready for printing, and the one in OpenOffice, which was chosen after evaluating several open source software because it has a good editor for mathematical formulas. The version of OpenOffice can be changed at will by whom the book you should use it.
Would not it be more correct to achieve the same book with free tools?

Updates

It 'a long time since I write, perhaps too much, but things happen that disrupt life and leave no room for more. But we must shake, and then here I am updating the visitors of my living room.
few months ago, I talked about the book open source, but a night at a dinner Grolug, I was able to browse and see what a fine book it was. I had many questions to satisfy curiosity and so I got in touch with his creator and I suggested an interview. Antonio Bernardo I found very helpful and when I interviewed him I have felt the enthusiasm of those who were offering something innovative and practical meaning that only a mathematician can but also have a sincerity in answering questions that I asked myself how good it was confirmed that the project is continuing.
Then it was the turn of Linux and even there the day my curiosity was piqued by wiild and I just recently completed and published a new interview with the President of Grolug which precisely the wiild has been filed.
I can tell you a curious person who gives nothing more satisfying than interviewing people that stimulate curiosity and, with their answers, can quench the thirst for knowledge.
I had thought not to publish here my interviews because I do not actually belong more since I sold the rights but nothing forbids me to do it if I quote the source and how can I give my readers to read them here.
Happy reading.

Multiverse Rooms On Poptropica

of the Gospel and other moral issues

Anche qui, recensendo un libro, “ Il Vangelo secondo Gesù Cristo ”, hotratto lo spunto per un nuovo post; visto che le vicissitudini socio politicheabnormi e deprimenti Italian lead me to think ...
What makes us good Christians?
limititerreni certainly be aware of our body makes us behave a certain way, but nonper all, this is the same way. Some, for example, feel that they have, after death, no other life available, believe they have the right dicomportarsi like best, and believes that doing everything glipassa the head, will, at least , its desires and moriràtranquillo satisfied and contented. Instead there is anyone, even not believing in the spirit, considers that it must comply with all other persons, rules and laws delvivere civilian who goes even more in there, and wants to preserve nature erispettare well as animals and the environment in which we live, us and them. It asks you to those who were devout Catholics, they kill, steal, spessomembri of mafias, are at least fantasioseper justifications for their crimes? None. Of course we condemn, but we do not solve the problemalegato closely to the consciousness that each of us has a certain fact, behavior, mode of action.
often said " unconsciousness," but it is not. It 's a different consciousness, a lack derivado that objective, and often due to a lack of resources perraggiungerla by empathic awareness, sensitivity of the person who versofatti not relate closely, which allow intercalation nellevicissitudini others, to ensure that problems are also a problemidi all, and in doing so we strive to find the solution that will enable the whole case, and all 'laospita environment, to preserve itself.
often in my life, I changed ideasulla deity, especially in this youth, but now I interrogosovente. I will do well? I'll do wrong? Nobody knows, nobody. E 'peròassolutamente legitimate. With the book "According to Jesus Christ IlVangelo , Saramago raises, or better, I think that puts the man in front of an important question: how to live la propria vita cessandodi essere succubi del sentire comune, liberandosi delle catene che sono leusanze e le dottrine, i dogmi, il pensiero dominante?

Ed è in quest’empatia con Gesù che sigioca la storia di questo libro; con l’empatia che si ha verso Giuseppe sindall’inizio del libro, che apre ad an old way of conceiving the Traglia men and women, stupid and sexist, and of these with the Godhead, and sealed regardless of the pain that often results in not without a vein dipiacere. In the upheaval of the fees we are used to from childhood, we discover an earthly dimension, real, Jesus, who must misurarsicon a truth that is revealed, much, different from what he learned nellesue frequenting the synagogue, as it is rather other than the story cuica have used films and cheesy indoctrination, discorsireligiosi made by priests and popes of all times and places. But not lasciamociingannare from religious discourse. The message is that trying to thwart ilvolo who has immense power, there is always a sorry plight. The unicascappatoia will be to never accept, outset, the rule that siimpone those who want to follow an idea at all costs. The end does not justify imezzi when the end is an end of suffering, and even more so when imezzi inflict suffering, a toll that, inevitably, will call more blood and suffering. Through the story of raw emotions concretee of events and times, as well as cruel in lororealismo brutal, until it fades into nothingness, the tale of the Christmas story, a story that only latenerezza with the last film about " The Passion of the Christ " capital if they have gravity and suffering.

emancipating the masses do not come? Anchequesta is another question that arises, given that, since the dawn deitempi, there were always multitudes that they conform, then as now, the interests of powerful inculcated through various means the single thought. As well as deceiving the ending, which I do not want, here reveals many menotruculento, and sweet, compared to scenes described above: it sounds a bit like a sugary given after the beatings inflicted on a Christian, that the link vedesvilito human / for which God gives life. There are many things to which we hannoabituato years of indoctrination, and others are only hinted at, as a matter of importance dipoca. But the strange thing is that if you miss, the spintafinale, the moral he draws is that we should, for the menoquelli still not even think about it, to open eyes, to look attornoe draw conclusions own, apart from drastically pensieromaggioritario not dampen the ever critical, especially to things that cistanno to my heart: let us to our surroundings with the same commitment Concu take care of ourselves and if we do not take good care of ourselves, we learn to love, that does not mean the pursuit of personal success conqualsiasi half. If until now we have loved with all noistessi something, do not be ashamed to repudiate and terminate it if, later, there appears intutto his deception.
